Trades and Local Schools

Historically the Incorporated Trades has been raising money for many years with an annual collection at the Big Pie to be used in the form of prizes for the two Academies in Irvine - Irvine Royal and Greenwood. These have been presented in cash to the best entries in Technical subjects and Home Economics.

This has given motivation and encouragement to many students to improve their skill and, hopefully, become involved with a local trade. The passing of many Apprenticeship schemes has been sadly mourned as many trades are dying and it is increasingly difficult to find qualified craftsmen in many areas.

A great deal of voluntary time and effort has been given for several decades by the Deacons of the Crafts in judging these various competitions at the academies. Changes abound in society and its fascinating to see that many girls have become involved in technical skills, once taught only to boys, and likewise the number of boys shown a keen aptitude in Home Economics, again once taught only to girls.

It is hoped that the strong bonds between schools and Incorporation will prosper for many years still to come.
